Koi fish (Nishikigoi)

Koi (Nishikigoi) is a variety of common carp Cyprinus Carpio. They were originally found in China and quickly spread to Japan and Korea. Breeding of Koi were made popular by Japanese and thus Japanese koi has been known for it's beauty and found popularity among hobbyist.

There are many varieties of Koi. However the main varieties are Kohaku, Sanke, and Showa also known as Go Sanke. In a Koi contest these 3 varieties will almost certainly bring home the Grand Championship title as they are the most popular types.

I have my own collection of Koi fishes. Watching them swim around the pond everyday brings peace of mind. They are beautiful to watch as they swim gleefully around the pond. When it comes to feeding times they will swim over each other trying to get as much food as possible. I managed to train them with hand feeding. Whenever I go near the pond, they will all come as if to greet me and ready to get any food that I throw into the pond.

Choosing a good nice Koi is itself a challenge. Selecting a good quality Koi is not easy. You will need a lot of experience in identifying a potential Koi. By joining Koi contest and keeping Koi from young then you will be able to gain good experience. There are many criteria when it comes to selecting Koi. Each variety will have its own criteria which makes it difficult to remember all. I will discuss this criteria in my future blog.
